18 people died in the shooting

On Sunday, Eastern Cape police confirmed that an eighteenth person had been killed following a shooting in the village of Ngobozana in Lusikisiki.

The family members were murdered by unidentified gunmen who opened fire on the farm.

“Eastern Cape SAPS can confirm that the eighteenth victim died in hospital today (Sunday),” Eastern Cape Provincial Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said.

“There are no other new developments. However, a police investigation is ongoing.”

On Saturday, IOL reported that a two-month-old baby was one of the people who miraculously survived the mass shooting that killed 17 people at the time. Among the murdered were 15 women, including the mother of a two-month-old child.

Earlier, SAPS national spokeswoman Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said six people survived the shooting.

“We woke up to the sad news that 17 people were shot dead in the village of Ngobozana in Lusikisiki. In the first farm we understand that four people were shot. There were no survivors. In the second household, we understand that 19 people slept in two houses in one yard. 13 of them were shot,” Mathe said.

“We have six survivors. They include four women, we have a seriously injured man, but we also have a two-month-old baby. There were no injuries, but we took precautions and took the baby to a local hospital for medical care.”

By Sunday, the number of survivors had dropped to five.
