Sept. 29 (UPI) — The single-engine plane crashed in the woods near the Wright Brothers National Memorial First Flight Airport in Manteo, North Carolina.

Eyewitnesses told National Park Service investigators that the plane was trying to land at the airport when it crashed and caught fire around 5 p.m. Saturday.

“The fire was extinguished by the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and other local fire departments,” the National Park Service said in a statement. “Multiple passengers confirmed dead.”

The airport was closed until further notice while the National Transportation Safety Board investigated the crash. The monument was also closed on Sunday after the incident.
