Emergency crews are working to save passengers from a small-engine plane that crashed into Utah Lake Friday morning.

At the moment, the number of people on board the plane is unknown.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office told the Daily Herald that the plane may have been cleared to land at Provo Airport when it plunged into the water.

Several crews from the sheriff’s office, search and rescue units, Utah State Parks and fire departments from Provo and Saratoga Springs are assisting with lake operations.

It’s unclear exactly where the plane hit the water, but Cannon said it was close to the airport.

Saratoga Springs Fire Department officials told KSL-TV the plane submerged to a depth of about 8 feet. Authorities said the status of the pilot, crew and passengers was unknown, but the likelihood of survival was low.

The Daily Herald is working to obtain more information and will update this story as more information becomes available.
