Two people died in separate school bus crashes in Los Angeles County

Two people, including an innocent bicyclist, died in separate school bus crashes in Los Angeles County Friday morning.

The first crash occurred in Lancaster around 7 a.m. on Avenue M, east of 20th Street.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, a gray SUV was traveling east on Avenue M when the driver swerved into oncoming traffic, striking the school bus “nearly head-on.” The police are still investigating why the driver swerved into the other lane.

Footage from the scene shows that the front of the SUV was completely crushed. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second crash occurred in Cerritos around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Del Amo and Norwalk boulevards. Deputies said the bus was turning onto Norwalk when another car ran a red light. That’s when the bus and a passenger car collided.

Surveillance footage from the scene shows the accident. The turning school bus hit the back of a black sedan, causing it to swerve. The rear of the car then hit the person on the bike, pinning him against a traffic light pole.

LASD said there were no passengers on either school bus at the time of the crashes. The condition of both the bus drivers and the sedan driver in Cerritos is unclear.
