The Nashville Zoo welcomes Red River piglet “Tot.”

“The Nashville Zoo celebrated the arrival of an adorable red piglet named Tot, born on Friday, June 14, to mother Tater. This footage was recorded on June 17 by zoo staff and shows tiny Tot lying among a stuffed animal toy as he curiously sniffs at the recorder. Tot was born just two months after the first ever litter of red river piglets. Although the piglet is growing and gaining strength each day, it had a rocky start, the zoo said in a news release. “The mother was not breastfeeding and became quite lethargic,” said zoo veterinarian Louden Wright. “We made the decision to transfer her to the veterinary intensive care unit, where she has been warmed and hydrated, has responded well to treatment, and is now being bottle-fed by the animal care team.\u201d Although red pigs are not considered endangered, the Nashville Zoo has stated that they are contributing to work to protect a species native to west and central Africa, and that Tot will one day become an ambassador representing her species.
