Consultation on ACT transitioning away from natural gas

A man in a helmet looks at the tablet screen.

The regulation preventing new connections to the gas network is an important step towards ensuring Canberra becomes a thriving net-zero city by 2045.

Canberra residents will be able to submit their views on proposals to prevent new gas connections in the ACT as part of the Government’s plan to transition away from fossil fuels.

Moving away from gas is part of the ACT’s efforts to become a net zero emissions city by 2045. Fossil fuel gas currently accounts for more than 20 percent of the territory’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The regulation preventing new connections to the gas network is an important step towards ensuring Canberra becomes a thriving, net zero emissions city by 2045 and represents a significant change for ACT communities.

Given the likelihood of gas prices rising in the future, all-electric buildings represent a better financial and environmental choice for future users.

The issues paper is now available on YourSay Conversations and the ACT Government is seeking community feedback to better understand the impact of such a change on all Canberrans.

Community feedback will help inform the development of the regulation, which will begin in the second half of 2023.

Support available for Canberrans looking to convert their homes and businesses to electricity includes:

  • zero interest loans under the Sustainable Household Program
  • discounts for low-income households for switching from gas to electric heating under the Home Energy Support Program
  • discounts for small and medium-sized enterprises under the Sustainable Business Program.
